Painting The Town

Alex Katz takes a break in his Manhattan work space amid recently completed canvases, including a first-ever “double portrait,” as he calls it.

Works on display in the loft include a framed drawing by Willem de Kooning (on the wall, at center) and three pieces by Katz (from left: Ellen, Edwin and Rudy, and Ada).

In the living area are a marble-top low table, a vintage scroll-arm sofa—and a new painting.

Tools of the trade.

Arranged on a kitchen cupboard are oil-on-aluminum cutouts by Katz.

Shoes, Shoes and More Shoes...

It's been a long while since my last update on flickr. Finally I've got time added some shoes to my online shoe wardrobe. A lot of the photos were taken when I first moved into my new home two years ago and there's still some shoes hiding somewhere in boxes left in the garage. Never ending work, housework and blogging ended up with no time to do other things. Hehe... there's always excuses for laziness.  More shoes are storage here on flickr.

Travel in Shanghai
Day 2
Shanghai Old Town
Chenghuang Temple & Yuyuan Garden
上海上海老街, 黃浦區老城隍廟, 豫園.

"Centered between Renmin Road and Zhongshan Road, it is located southeast of the city centre. In the Old Town is known as the bright pearl of Shanghai is a perfect combination of gardens, temples, old architecture, civil culture, business, souvenirs, and food."

"The Chenghuang temple is a Taoist temple, also called Yi temple, which is composed of many a halls such as the grand hall, middle hall, bedroom palace, star gods hall, Yama palace, Xuzhen god hall and so on. the Chenghuang temple had an area of more than 10,000 square meters including two gardens: west garden (Yu garden) and east garden. the Chenghuang temple has a great influence on the residents of Shanghai. the religious festivals of the temple are considered to be the festivals of all Shanghai people. especially when the Sanxun festival (a day when the chenghuang god start to inspect his people) comes, nearly all people will come to the chenghuang temple to burn incense and worship the Chenghuang god, while all shops inside or near the chenghuang temple would hang red lanterns to celebrate the festival. in addition, some folk arts, like cockfight, penmanship performance and acrobatics, are fairly attractive."

The best way to get around town is either by taxi or on the metro. A ride from our hotel to Chenghuang Temple was around RMB$20 (AUD$3). Taxi drivers in Shanghai are very polite and helpful.

Thou blind fool Love, what dost thou to mine eyes

Thou blind fool, Love, what dost thou to mine eyes,
That they behold, and see not what they see?
They know what beauty is, see where it lies,
Yet what the best is take the worst to be.
If eyes corrupt by over-partial looks
Be anchor'd in the bay where all men ride,
Why of eyes' falsehood hast thou forged hooks,
Whereto the judgment of my heart is tied?
Why should my heart think that a several plot
Which my heart knows the wide world's common place?
Or mine eyes seeing this, say this is not,
To put fair truth upon so foul a face?
In things right true my heart and eyes have erred,
And to this false plague are they now transferr'd.
